Curriculum

The basic grouping in the school is the Tutor Group.  The school has recently moved to a vertical tutor group system, this means that there are six or seven students from each year group in a Tutor Group.  The aim of this is to promote a better sense of community amongst our students and give older students more responsibility for younger students.  Students stay in the same Tutor Group for the four years at the High School.  Where possible the Tutor remains with their group across the years and therefore acquires a lot of knowledge of their students over the four years.

The Tutor Groups are grouped together into three Communities of six groups each.  A Senior member of staff - the Community Leader - supports the Tutors and is the figurehead for the students.

The students are also put in teaching groups within their year.  When students first enter the school in Year Six, we use information about the students' previous achievements and advice from Primary Schools to create mixed ability teaching groups.  We aim to ensure that children enter their new groups with at least one friend but we also mix the different Primary schools together.

Departments in the school also put students into groups according to the policy that they have developed to ensure the most effective progress of students possible.

Students may be moved between groups from time to time if it is in the best interest of their learning.  Normally teachers will discuss such moves with the students concerned.
